Reels - Is it a reason for Cognitive Decline

Reels - Is it a reason for Cognitive Decline

In good olden days, our movies were of three and half hours with thirty songs - and in fact we enjoyed them. It got reduced as two hours, then we preferred short films of twenty minutes and now in the era of Reels with ninety seconds. This is the Movie Metamorphosis we had gone through.

As Reels are the current trend in social media at present, the creators are forced to show anything and everything in ninety seconds. Mostly the Reels are made just to attract and retain the audience throughout more than the quality of the content.

"Reels Culture" makes us  -
-  to expect anything shown to conclude by ninety seconds with an ultra short attention span
- want something new every ninety seconds
- need interesting content of your taste and flavour instantly otherwise to skip for next one (with poor patience..)
In fact, Reels makes our brain to have an "hasty processing of information" with fast transition from one information to another - leads to "sensory overload" which affects the attention span, analytical ability and retention- the memory, thereby the important cognitive functions of our brain.

Brain Stroke at Younger age is on rise.

Brain Strokes at younger age is on rise. With better acute management, ones life is saved but left with deficits - cognitive, Speech, swallow, motor, bladder, bowel and so on. People not knowing what to do while keeping such patients at home. Big need for comprehensive rehab management to keep up their quality of life. Getting calls every day asking what to do with this post stroke sequalae - and its still more difficult in tier 2 and remote places. Though a hospital has constraints in making a complete rehab unit, it's high time to upskill the existing resources atleast to manage post stroke sequalae. Planning for a telerehab concept to facilitate rehab care at remote places -  which I will release it soon.

Inadequate management of Hypertension, Diabetes, Dyslipidemia. Along with evident risk factors like Smoking, Alcohol, Sedentary lifestyle - now people sleep less, eat more at odd time (absolute slaves of their taste buds), talk more (especially over mobile phones) with unnecessary arguments over social media causing adrenergic rush. STAY HEALTHY, STAY SAFE.

Hearing Music with Headsets and high volume leads to Noise Induced Hearing Loss

*Hearing Music with Headsets and High volume leads to Noise Induced Hearing Loss*
- Dr.R.Karthikeyan - drkarthikrehab.com

Sounds can be harmful when they are too loud, even for a brief time, or when they are both loud and long-lasting. These sounds can damage sensitive structures in the inner ear and cause Noice Induced Hearing Loss (NHIL).

Sounds at or below 70 A-weighted decibels (dBA), are unlikely to cause hearing loss, whereas long or repeated exposure to sounds at or above 85 dBA can cause hearing loss. Music through headphones at maximum volume is at range of 94-110 dBA. The louder the sound, the shorter the amount of time it takes for NIHL to happen, causing damage to hair cells in inner ear.

As the damage from noise exposure is usually gradual, you might not notice it, or you might ignore the signs of hearing loss until they become more pronounced. Over time, sounds may become distorted or muffled, and you might find it difficult to understand other people when they talk or have to turn up the volume on the television.

Noice Induced Hearing Loss is completely preventable, by following safety precautions and avoiding to hear loud sounds.

Diabetic Foot - MUST be screened among Diabetics. Dr.Karthikeyan R @ drkarthikrehab.com

In a person with longstanding diabetes, his feet with reduced sensation, difficulty / clumsiness in walking, dryness and cracking of skin - all these are due to
Diabetic Foot. Studies say that nearly 25 percent of diabetics are prone for Diabetic Foot- a complication mostly goes unnoticed till late stage.
As the screening for heart, eyes and kidneys- screening for Diabetic Foot is equally important. Longstanding untreated Diabetic Foot can lead to further complications which can affects one's quality of life to a larger extent.
Screening and early detection of Sensory disturbances and muscle weakness of Foot can avoid further problems. Strict Glycemic control, Periodical monofilament testing, Biothesiometry, Skin care and Foot wear modifications are very important for having healthy feet among diabetics.

Appraisal ..

Are all Chat Platforms safe for Healthcare ?

In our present healthcare system, communication and sharing of patient information among our colleagues is very important for prompt clinical decision making. We use many chat platforms like Whatsapp, Telegram in our work place for our sharing patient details to discuss on treatment options, to get opinions - for the benefit of our patients.

We need to look into certain important factors - how safe in terms of Data security and Privacy when we use Open chat platforms in our hospitals / clinics.
- All information about the patient which are shared in the chat,  is stored in everyone's mobile and there is more chance of getting forwarded outside - like patient clinical information, clinical photographs.
- Even if a person leaves an organization, still he carries all the information from his workplace which was shared through the open source chat platform all these days.

When it comes to Healthcare,  it is ideal that we should have a better control over the group members (with their defined roles and permissions) and the data shared (as not to download, forward the information without permissions).

Hence it is always appropriate to use customized platforms for communication in Healthcare which are compliant with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and assures data security and privacy.

Keep moving.. to be ALIVE

When you need to be alive, the blood should keep moving.
For the blood to move, your heart should keep moving
For your heart to move, the electrical impulse should keep moving from SA node to ventricles
For the electrical impulse to arise, the ions should keep moving across the cell membrane ( for depolarisation and action potential ).
So... to be really ALIVE.. keep MOVING.
Cheers.
